How common is it to expel a completely intact fetus after a miscarriage?

I knew in advance that the fetus had died because the sonogram showed no heartbeat. I was about 10 weeks into the pregnancy at the time. A D&C was scheduled but I miscarried on my own but was amazed to find the fetus completely intact inside a clear sac. I still had to have an immediate D&C because the placenta was still attached, and the pain was severe. I am curious to know if it is common to find the fetus in this condition.
