How common is HIV and AIDS among black young women in the United States?
HIV/AIDS is on the rise in black young women around the world and in the United States. In 2001, HIV was the leading cause of death for black women ages 25-34 living in the United States. Since HIV can take several years to progress to AIDS, this means that many of these women were infected in their teens and twenties. As of December 2001, 72% of all young women with HIV between 13-19 years of age were black (reported cases through December 2001). 60% of young women ages 13-24 with AIDS are black.
