While VMware Fusion can assign up to 4 virtual CPUs to a virtual machine on a quad-core or octo-core Mac Pro, Windows XP and Windows Vista are limited to two processor sockets only and virtual CPUs are socket-based. So, assign no more than 2 virtual CPUs to a Windows XP or Windows Vista virtual machine.
