How come the Nazi death camps weren destroyed after being found by the Allies during WWII?

Who was going to destroy them, and how were the people in the camps going to be rescued? There was a war going on. The Allies were not able to simply drive in, open the camp gates and free the people. They had to fight their way in – and once they got there, they did free the people. As to destroying the camps – they were kept as symbols of the dark side of humanity and, along with the Holocaust museum, serve as reminders of what can happen when a society runs amuck – and as a warning never to let this happen again. Without a physical reminder, it is too easy to forget – especially for the younger generations who were never exposed to the horrors of the Holocaust.
