How come some rabies vaccinations are good for one year, and some for three years?
With all dogs and cats, the FIRST rabies vaccination he receives, at whatever age (hopefully 4 months of age) is valid for one year. Thereafter, every rabies vaccination he receives is valid for three years. The same vaccine is used for these vaccinations. This is not a program that has been devised by Veterinarians, or Animal Control…it is the recommendation of the vaccine manufacturers. Through their extensive research, the manufacturers have proven that to maintain the necessary level of protection from the vaccine, the vaccination must be boostered one year after the initial vaccination. Thereafter, the appropriate level can be maintained by vaccinating every three years. It is recommended, however, that should your dog be exposed to a potentially rabid animal, he receive an immediate booster vaccination. Remember, although your dog’s rabies vaccination may be valid for three years, his LICENSE must be renewed EVERY year.
