How come people aren tolerant of atheists in america?
Pew and Gallup polls both show that atheists are the most reviled and mistrusted minority in America today- more so than homosexuals or Muslims, even in this political climate. In fact, one such study showed that people would rather their child bring home a CONVICT than an atheist as a potential mate. People consistently are ignorant of the foundations of this nation as a secular democratic republic (see Peach’s response), mistakenly believing the US to be a “Christian nation”. The fact that fundamentalism is on the rise in the US amongst Christians, even with a general decrease in the percentage of theistic Americans, contributes heavily to this intolerance, ignorance, and bigotry. Fundamentalists of all religions tend to be violent and vitriolic towards those of other faiths (or none), and Christians are no exception.
