How come over 5000 of Greeces islands are uninhabited?

0

The majority of those islands are rocky and ragged little islets, barely a few square meters, with not proper shelter from the winds and the sea and mostly impossible to access even in the calm waters of the summer. However, some of the bigger ones do provide some form of protection and are used, under proper permission by the authorities, for goat raising by visiting shepherds. Some others that can sustain life, are inhabited during the summer, when a lot of sailing boats and outboard motor boats stop for a daily outing in their clear waters, and small coves. For the few lucky ones who can afford the luxury, that keep increasing every year.
