How come 3D animation movies look 10x better than most video games?
First of all, movies have ONE storyline. Video games MUST have multiple storylines, meaning they have to animate for all of them. Thus, to save money, they don’t, or the game is not done to the higher quality of the movie. Second, movies can be higher quality, because to keep the speed of “reality” for the relatively low amount of memory, the resolution is not going to be as good. Then, you have to limitations of the gaming engine and memory left over. If it’s designed to handle 3D, it will, but conversely to #2, above, if they used the highest quality of the images, it would slow the engine down so much, people would complain.
