How closely do the written lessons need to be followed?
The lessons should be taught as written. That said, teachers can make decisions based on the needs of their students in many places in the lessons. These include decisions about which of the suggested questions to ask in the whole-class discussion, how much time to spend on reviewing a cooperative structure, and the problems to discuss during the social reflection.
