How close have scientists come to absolute zero temperature?
Zero degrees Kelvin equals minus 273.15 °C. Scientists say that nothing can become colder than that, but we have never actually got that far down in temp. The lowest manmade temperature achieved so far is 450 picokelvin. It was achieved by a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologu in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA: The results were published in Science magazine on September 12, 2003.
Just to note that absolute zero K can never be reached because of the second law of thermodynamics. If it were to be reached than ALL motion, even on a subatomic level, would have had to have more or less stopped; so you couldn’t ‘t draw any further energy from an object. This explains why: http://www.allaboutscience.org/third-law… http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/a/a… And the laws of thermodynamics are not ‘theories’ but physical laws. In other words no one has yet found an exception to them and they appear to apply across the universe in all situations.
