How can you tell the difference between a fake diamond and a real one?
Synthetic diamond is identical to naturally-occurring diamond. Sometimes natural diamonds have flaws that synthetic diamonds do not. Some synthetic diamonds contain impurities that can give them away, although it is possible to make synthetic diamonds without any impurities. Diamonds are just carbon crystals, so there’s no magic to making perfect synthetic diamonds. When comparing diamonds to other, non-diamond imitations, things are easier. Real diamonds are transparent to all forms of electromagnetic radiation. They will scratch all non-diamonds. They will burn with a bluish flame if sufficiently heated (remember, they are just carbon). They are the world’s best known conductors of heat, which means that they usually feel cold to the touch (because they instantly conduct heat away from your skin). Any gem specialist can readily distinguish between true diamond and non-diamond.
