How can you tell the age of a baby amazon parrot?
If the bird is not banded there is no way to know exact age. A lot of breeders have stopped using bands due to the danger of it getting caught on something and hurting the birds leg. Also a lot of parrots owns have had the bands removed due to the same dangers. I had the band taken off both our Amazon after our DYH got her foot caught because of the band. Luck for her I was right there and got her to hold still so I could get her foot uncaught. We also have a DYH who I bought 6 years ago Christmas Eve. He did not have a band and I did not care how old he was. By his amount of coloring and health issues he is now at least 50 years old though per two different Avain vets. If you were offered this parrot from a breeder make sure to check references and also have it vet checked (by an Avain vet). I did this with our DYH just to make sure he was in no pain. He has a cataract and arthritis in both feet but he not in pain per both vet. He is the biggest lover and cuddler in the US too.
