How can you tell for sure if an older book is a valuable first edition copy ?
It’s not easy to recognize first editions, but here are a few pointers. Some things about older first editions: – The date on the copyright page is the same as the one on the title page – Copyright page states “First Edition”, “First Impression”, “First Printing”, a line of number from 1 to 10 with number “1” present, a sequence of letters with “a” present. “First Published” + date and no additional printings indicated. “First American Edition” usually means that there was a previous edition in another country. – Generally, first edition must have a prize inside the dust jacket. There are some very rare exceptions for this, and you can find that by searching that specific book title. If any of your books has no prize, it’s probably a Book Club. Also common for older Book Club edition: look at the back board of your book (that the back after you take off the dust jacket).
