If you have no formal training at all, like even as little as a church choir, I think the best way to start is to isolate a number of songs you know 100%, every word, every pluck of every guitar string (I describe this as one you can play in your head), and from that group, determine which ones are within your range. This takes some experimentation. You may not be able to hit every note at exactly the same octave as the artist, but if you can do so at one higher or lower, you can adapt changes that will allow you to sing the song. There may be some songs (like for me, “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley), where you just can’t do this, so learning what not to learn by is important. Failure is frustrating and will hold you back. Once you’ve determined a song that can be made to be within your range, my advice is to put it on very loud, put your fingers mostly into your ears to effect a “monitor” (where you can hear your voice over the music and voice of the artist), and simply sing that one s
