How can you restore an old rusty cast iron skillet?

I’d use water and a metal scouring pad to scrape as much of the rust off the pan as I could. No heavy elbow grease needed — you just want a smooth cooking surface. Rust is not dangerous — a little extra iron in your diet is probably good for you. Then I’d liberally apply olive oil to the inside and outside of the pan — use a cooking brush or paper towel. Let it absorb for awhile then wipe extra oil off the pan with a paper towel. Then bake the pan at 300 F (150 centrigrade) for a couple of hours and let the pan cool down in the stove. more info: http://www.kountrylife.com/content/how1.
