How can you remove calcium from oil hot water tank without putting a water softerner in?
Answer Hello Paul, I don’t think even a water softener will remove calcium if there is a significant buildup already. It may over a very long time, longer than the life of the water heater itself. Most manufactures recommend flushing out the water heater by draining at least 1/3 of the tank via the small faucet or drain at the bottom of the tank. In my experience, this is rarely done by the average homeowner. If you have excessive calcium in your water, there are treatment systems available to reduce it, including a water softener. Check with a local supplier of water treatment systems line Culligan etc. to see if they offer any options. Actually treating the tank itself with something is usually not practical. Calcium is a “base”. To counter it you would need an acid of some type. Not the safest thing to be using in a potable water system.
