March 15, 2005 9:18 AM Dear Vegetarians, 🙂 I was telling someone in another forum how to properly season a cast iron skillet (see below) and they asked me what could someone who didn’t eat pork use. I wasn’t sure, I thought maybe rendered beef fat would work too, but then I started to wonder what a vegetarian could use since vegetable oil isn’t at all suitable for the purpose of seasoning a cast-iron skillet since it leaves a sticky surface. This is no good at all. Seasoning the skillet should, properly, give it a non-stick surface. Very important. Anyways I figured that somewhere amongst the membership in this group there might be at least a few people who know a good way for a vegetarian to properly season their cast-iron without using animal fats or vegie oil. I would love to hear from y’all about this matter and thank you in advance for any input you can offer. bbfn, Diana Lee G.
