How can you make a dilute solution of a strong acid?
You mix the acid with distilled water. This, however, requires that one take certain precautions depending on the acid involved. Some acids release heat as the dissolve. So, you need to mix them slow so as to give the heat time to dissipate. Other acids will release dangerous fumes. So, you need to mix them in a fume hood. The fumes of some acids can crystallize to form explosive solids. These should only be used in special self-washing fume hoods. So, as you can see, there are are a number of potential hazard to diluting strong acids. These are in addition to the potential chemical burns. So, unless you know what you are doing, you should not be messing around with these substances.
