3) Other – It is VERY rare that NFL position coaches, special teams coaches, or collegiate coaches at smaller programs or college coordinators will make the leap to NFL head coach. But it DOES happen. The Baltimore Ravens current head coach John Harbaugh was a defensive backs coach for the Eagles for one year after being an excellent special teams coach for a long time. Andy Reid of the Eagles was a QB coach with the Packers when the Eagles hired him. Arguably the largest leap into an NFL coaching vacancy in recent memory though would be the Oakland Raiders hiring a collegiate offensive coordinator (and not a particularly long-tenured one either) in Lane Kiffin.
