How can women on Medicaid for Pregnant Women (TP 40) transition to the Medicaid Women’s Health Program and avoid a gap in coverage?

Women cannot be enrolled in both Medicaid for Pregnant Women and the Medicaid Women’s Health Program at the same time. To transition from Medicaid for Pregnant Women to the Medicaid Women’s Health Program, a client must apply for the Medicaid Women’s Health Program in the month following the expiration of her eligibility for Medicaid for Pregnant Women. For example, if a woman will lose eligibility in Medicaid for Pregnant Women in April, she should apply for the Medicaid Women’s Health Program in May. If she provides all necessary documentation in a timely manner and is eligible, she will be enrolled in the Medicaid Women’s Health Program as of May 1. Women who lose eligibility for Medicaid for Pregnant Women will not automatically be transferred to the Medicaid Women’s Health Program; they must apply for and be certified in the Medicaid Women’s Health Program.
