Believe it or not, The Sun Causes Wind The sun could be called “the master of the wind”. In other words; the sun, or heating from the sun, causes the wind and with wind we have wind power. The earth’s surface can effect the speed the surface heats and cools. Sand, stone, and different soils heat at different rates, thus releasing heat all during the day and cooling at night. Even great bodies of water can affect how rapidly the earth heats and cools. Most of us know that heat rises. You may remember the second floor of your home being warmer in the summer than the lower floor. The basement was even cooler. When heat rises, it reduces the atmospheric pressure near the surface. When heat goes, cooler air replaces it. As the cool air replaces the warm air, we have wind and wind power.
