How can we sensitize common man about conservation and protection of wildlife?
A project was launched in Kenya called “kippo” where the local people hated elephants because they raid the crops, which they have worked on for six months, and when they are about to harvest the crops the elephants create havoc. Because of this people wanted to kill all the elephants. This was the same case in India too. Then one NGO worked out a scheme were they farm butterflies in the forest. They encouraged butterflies to lay eggs, the pupas which are formed by butterflies (caterpillar) are exported to U.K and U.S.A. One gets around one pound per pupa. Now suddenly these farmers are in love with the elephants and forests, because now forest gives butterflies and butterflies give money. So now the entire attitude has changed. So we have to workout a solution that can be benefit the local people monetarily and not by just talking to them in air.
