How Can We Promote Mathematics Excellence Among Black Students in Urban Education?
Tanya Dwellingham and Alanna Johnson In this paper, we develop our stories of “self” and examine how our life experiences led us to explore the issue of promoting mathematics excellence among Black children in urban education. Using research to highlight the disparities between mathematics teaching and learning in suburban versus urban schools, we conclude by offering an educational model to address what is perceived as an achievement gap among White and Black students in reference to mathematics.
