How can we prepare for the yellowstone volcano?
If the volcano at Yellowstone were to erupt like it did 640,000 years ago, we’d love to paint a survival scenario for you. However, beyond getting ready for the cold that might come due to the ash blotting out the sun and life as we know it (and moving away from the center of the eruption as much as possible) a survival scenario really doesn’t exist in the traditional sense. Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) has developed a monitoring plan for the period 2006-2015 to increase our ability to provide timely information during seismic, volcanic, and hydrothermal crises and to anticipate hazardous events before they occur. Upgrades to the monitoring network will provide high-quality data for scientific study and interpretation of one of the largest active volcanic systems in the world. Equipment additions and upgrades will bring the seismic network up to modern standards and add stations in areas that lack adequate station coverage. Borehole strainmeters and tiltmeters will be added to
Actually the Long Valley super volcano in California is a bigger danger. Mammoth Mountain is part of it and there has been out gassing of CO2 to the point some animals and people have died. It is also a lot closer to major cities. But either way, all we can do to prepare is to keep an eye on them and if it does look like they are going to blow, get out of the area. Long term, if you have 1-2 years of food laid in you might survive if the transportation system collapses. Keep in mind that there have been repeated major disasters in the world well before man became #1. Besides super volcanoes we have had major meteor impacts, on thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs. We might be able to stop a meteor but I doubt we could ever stop a super volcano.
