You know you are singing in falsetto and not head voice when: 1.Your voice breaks or shifts abruptly when you go from your chest voice to your upper register. 2. There is a change in your breath support when going into your upper register. 3. There is a breathy sound. 4. The sound is weak. To increase your range there is not much you can do, but there is A LOT to do to get ACCESS to your whole vocal extension. It is simmilar to a gymnast, there is not much to do get a whole lot extra of elasticity than the one your body naturally has. Look on here for answers on breath support, there have been lots of answers in that area that will be helpful.
