How can we distinguish between low and mid and high altitude clouds?

Low clouds are the ones that rain (almost always), so if you had rain recently it is most likely that you had low clouds. The distinction is not an easy one, though. We just ask for your best judgement. In some places, you may be able to visit a local weather page and see if the ceiling is reported. This is the altitude of cloud base. It is generally only reported for lower clouds. Also see Lin’s tips for some additional ideas.
