How can we address the high unemployment and crime rates in the country?
On crime, I must commend the Nigerian Police on their crime control efforts in spite of their shortcomings. They (Police) have been able to control crime rates to some extent. You must understand that in a nation where inflation and depression bite hard, crime rate and unemployment go up. But, I think we must not allow it to degenerate because what I see is that there is frustration in the mind of the ordinary Nigerian. In those days when the governors were coming (on the road) and they blow siren, we all ran away, but, now, that is not the case. Now, a way out is that you can use external reserve to protect essential services, not somebody wanting to bring in champagne and he is supplied form “M”. Our CBN should focus on major things that can help bring down inflation by focusing on such economic policies that will help strictly essential services. If someone wants to build a house on top of water, that’s his business.
