How can u keep guinea pigs in the house with out smelling?
Two words – clean and dry. Most of the odor, even from the hay comes from damp and decomposition. Guinea pig urine and feces have very little odor on their own. Grass hay and guinea pig chow have kind of a pleasant earthy smell that isn’t very strong. When the bedding, feces or hay are allowed to get and stay damp, bacteria and fungi start to break them down and release ammonia and other volatile compounds in the process. This is what smells. So, if you keep the cage clean and dry you won’t have smelly guinea pigs. One thing that helps is to scoop out the part of the cage that they use as their toilet area and the area under the water bottle every day or so and replace the used bedding with fresh. This can stretch the length of time between full changings to a week or so if you are lucky.
