On license plates, coins and elsewhere, North Carolina boasts that it’s “first in flight,” and Ohio claims to be the “birthplace of aviation.” Wilbur and Orville Wright tested the first powered manned airplane at Kitty Hawk, N.C. But they were from Dayton, Ohio, and did much of their flight research there.
