How can tuataras impact an ecosystem or us ecomonicaly?
Tuataras feed on invertebrates (worms, snails, insects) and small vertebrates (frogs, small birds and their eggs and even young tuataras). More of their prey would survive if the tuatara weren’t around and that could place additional pressure on the local ecosystems. Tuataras affect us economically in small part due to the conservation efforts directed in preserving them. These efforts cost money. I have no idea how much money New Zealand spends but that money comes from somewhere. Private citizens also fund rescue efforts. Tuataras also contribute to the tourist industry by serving as attractions. All of this provides jobs and marketing opportunities so there is some effect.
