How can the swine influenza virus be diagnosed?
To diagnose a swine influenza infection, a respiratory specimen is collected within the first 4 to 5 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be shedding virus). Sometimes especially with children, the specimen may collected for 10 days or more days. Identification as a swine flu influenza A virus requires sending the specimen to the CDC for laboratory testing.
