How can the jellyfish glow if its no longer alive?

A. This is a larger question than I have knowledge about but I do know that the part of the jellyfish that makes it glow is called Green Flourescent protein or GFP. It has taken many years of researching jellyfish for scientists to discover how this happens. I am not a scientist, but the way I understand it is that the process also involves the mineral called phosphorus, which we also have in our bodies in very small amounts. And because this mineral is involved, it doesn’t need a fluid-type of chemical reaction that one would expect in a living organism- it’s not like plugging a lamp into an electrical outlet. No “current” is needed. That’s why we can take the mineral phosphorus and sprinkle it in the Sea Globes we have and they also glow. It’s a reaction between the mineral and lightwaves.
