How can the industry do a better job of getting people outdoors?
PAIGEN: That’s an area where I don’t have a lot of ideas. I wish I did. There are programs for kids like Big City Mountaineers. I think those kind of programs are effective. I guess I’m a little bit pessimistic that American culture is such a juggernaut headed towards more video games, TV, and lethargy. It’s a little hard for me to understand how that’s going to turn around. OB: How about protecting the environment and promoting the outdoors? PAIGEN: I think there are a lot of companies out there that are spending a lot of time and energy promoting the outdoors and seeking to help the environment, and I applaud every one of them. At Chaco, one of the big vehicles for environmental work is the Conservation Alliance, which is a membership organization that makes grants to grassroots environmental organizations for their work preserving natural spaces.
