HOW CAN THE EXHIBITION BE USED AS A DISABILITY AWARENESS TOOL?
The Disability Discrimination Act and the Disability Equality Duty cover any disability/difficulty that may create a barrier to learning. People too readily assume that the disability has to be visible. Hidden disabilities such as Asperger’s, dyslexia, mental health concerns, ADHD all pose problems for students along with more obvious physical disabilities. These problems are often related to: feeling isolated, overwhelmed and confused by their environment, communicating with others, feelings of frustration, loneliness and anger. It can also be tied up with the bully and being bullied. The exhibition gives students the opportunity to voice these inner concerns and exchange thoughts – in particular finding strangers who understand their insecurities – which can then lead to feelings of inclusion rather than exclusion and makes it clear that in the end, with or without a disability, people are equal.
