The SL framework is a tool that aims to provide a ‘road map’ through the potential complexity of an SL approach. The framework itself may appear complex, but in many respects it is just a reminder to think logically and open-mindedly about the issues and factors that drive development. There is no need to work with the complex-looking DFID SL framework if this does not suit your needs: feel free to break the framework into pieces and redraw it in a way that is more logical for you and your partners. Equally there is no need to go into exhaustive detail when thinking about different aspects of the framework. The starting point is to ask broad questions, avoiding existing pre-conceptions. Use of some kind of checklist can help prevent important aspects being missed out.
