How can the amount of light on walkways or lanes be increased?
The City of Surrey does not install street lighting in walkways or rear lanes. However, if residents wish to increase lighting levels in lanes or walkways, they may choose to install motion detector lights. If lighting is desired to deter crime in an area, additional lighting is only one of many other options. Other more effective actions include family-based, education-based and community-based prevention programs, as well as employing Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles. Examples of these options include: rapid repairs to vandalism and graffiti, effective neighbourhood watch groups and hot-spot patrols. Contact Surrey Crime Prevention Society at 604-502-8555 for more information on this topic. If illegal activities are observed contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
