Census records can provide you with some interesting information. U.S. census records typically include the address of the residence, names of persons living in the same home, ages, relationship,  and occupations. Each country is different. For example, when researching my Swedish side, I located some relatives on the census. The Swedish census included religious information, such as; did they know the Lord’s Prayer, did they complete Catechism, are they literate, etc.. My ancestors became more than just names and dates.

Another example is the census procedure in Mexico, as it was conducted under the Spanish crown. A census of soldiers was often conducted separately. In it, they listed hair color, moustache and beard color, identifying marks on the body, etc…

So, in answer to your question, it all depends upon what you are looking for.
