How can teachers help ESOL students?
Teachers can help English Language Learners by providing a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages risk taking. This is a necessary component in the language acquisition process. Some practical recommendations for beginning as well as more advanced English Language Learners are: (1) Provide visual clues (posters, charts, gestures, maps, etc…). (2) Speak clearly, in short sentences. (3) Use verbs at the beginning of sentences. (4) Repeat and rephrase often. (5) Present oral directions slowly. (6) Encourage classmates to help each other – cooperative learning. (7) Use illustrated or simplified texts. (8) Give additional time to complete assignments. (9) Promote multicultural awareness in the classroom. (10) Find ways for the students to serve as resources whenever possible. (11) Modify assignments and tests.
