How can teachers help ESL students to become better listeners?
Students will be better listeners if they follow the advice on the previous slide. Teachers, however, have a significant part to play in helping students to follow the advice. Teachers can: require the attention of ESL students minimize distractions (e.g. shut classroom door) seat ESL students near the front of the class; require the wearing of prescribed glasses; talk from where they can be seen expect students to listen to other students do not permit dictionary use be ready to repeat or rephrase what they or other students have said check for comprehension – allow questions increase wait time (disallow shouting out) make connections explicit (review / preview) “signpost” the lesson or extended oral information ..
