Most of our industrial progress up to the present time has been rendered possible through standardization. The trouble is that standardization has not been carried far enough. There are too many arbitrary sizes and varieties of what is functionally the same commodity. Take a simple product such as soap. Chemically there are only a small number of separate basic formulas for soap. The number of brands of soap on the market, however, runs into the thousands. Not only has the achievement of standardization made possible our quantity production methods, but also the lack of standardization has at the same time been in no small part responsible for our low load factors.
