How Can Speech and Language Therapy Help?
The speech and language therapist has responsibility for assessing the person’s communication, swallowing and any need for alternative methods of communication to be introduced. In addition, the therapist will research the person’s level of functioning before the head injury. In this case the overall language profile will depend not only on the site and extent of the damage but also on the person’s language skills prior to the incident. The therapist will discuss the findings with all concerned in the person’s care and a specific programme will be devised to meet needs as appropriate.
