How can RPR co-exist on a SONET ring with traditional TDM services?

The line interface (ring access) cards on the Optical Metro 3500 provide SONET bandwidth management such as Time Slot Assignment, Time Slot Interchange, and Drop & Continue. These cards operate on a SONET level only and are unaware that any particular STS-N has RPR or TDM traffic. The Optical Packet Edge module accesses the specific SONET STS payload provisioned as an RPR and then performs the appropriate packet functions. Other TDM service modules are not provisioned to access the RPR STS payload.
