How can Rheumatic Fever be treated ?
Antibiotics, preferably penicillin or erythromycin, are used against the bacteria responsible for the infection. Antibiotics may be given long-term for chronic or resistant cases. Reduction in physical activity of the patient is advised. Bed rest may be recommended for some time to allow the body to heal. Fluid intake should be increased, at least 6 to 8 glasses per day. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, may be used to modify the immune response. Bed rest is recommended for a person who has rheumatic fever.
