How can pupils’ economic understanding and financial capability be developed through the study of social and environmental issues?
Heathfield Community School in Somerset has taught financial capability and money management through mathematics at key stage 3 for several years. However, an audit against the Every Child Matters outcomes and the new programmes of study for PSHE education made it clear that pupils did not see that they were learning life skills that would contribute to their long-term economic wellbeing. Staff decided to use focus days based around economic wellbeing that joined up learning from several subjects.
