How can priests commit such heinous crimes?
The priesthood embodies the person of Jesus and we expect a high level of morality from those who step into that role. The vast majority of priests do live up to this expectation. Many lives have been saved or helped by priests who make a real difference in our world. Unfortunately, the status of the priesthood also attracted some who were harboring evil intentions. While great care goes into the formation of priests, it is not always possible to tell who in our society is sick. Pedophiles have disguised themselves as priests, teachers, coaches, friends, and even family. There is no excuse for their behavior in any of these fields. Our church will continue to struggle to make itself a place of trust and refuge, because we have all been hurt by this crisis. Please pray for the priests and those of us working with them.
