How can polar bears survive the heat of Australia in zoos when its summer?
Polar Bears in captivity tend to live on a much leaner diet = no seals or other artic creatures full of blubber. So naturally, they don’t store as much fat, aren’t as insulated and can handle a higher temperature range. There are several Polar Bears living quite happily at the SD Zoo, which considering the plethora of Eucalyptus trees we have around here, the climate must be like at least some parts of Australia. The polar bears are provided with plenty of water to swim in (it is refrigerated) and they definitely take advantage. They will also occassionally make snow and put it in with them. So through physical and physiological methods, I would say a Polar Bear should be able to survive the heat of an Australian summer.
