How Can Pit Stains Be Removed From White Shirts?

To some degree, this is inevitable–it’s just the bacteria from sweat that, over time, accumulates and causes the discoloration. (The same thing often happens on the collars of white dress shirts as well, for the same reason.) You can help things a bit by pre-treating the affected area with a spray bottle filled with diluted bleach; some people prefer to just pre-treat the stain with one of the many available laundry stain sticks (see links), or with plain old laundry detergent. Whatever method you use, give it some time to work (say, 10-15 min or so). Follow that up with a hot water wash with bleach. That’s about the best you can do. The downside of this method is that this kind of rigorous treatment will, over time, gradually weaken the shirt fibers, so you lessen the wearability of the garment each time you do this. But that’s the price you pay, alas.
