Biologically: Since birds lack vocal cords, they need to condition their trachea (essentially) to form the sounds they hear. For us, this would be nearly impossible – try simply exhaling and speaking without using your vocal cords at all and the most you might get is a grunt. Sociologically: Many birds thrive in flocks. As a natural defense, many of these “flock” birds have the same colorations and look identical, short of a feather or two here and there. A flock of birds will dive out an outsider if it enters their flock since they can be very protective of their territory… and they need to be in order to survive. So that the flock can identify one another as belonging, since they all have very similar looks, they develop dialects in their vocal calls. One generation passes it on to the next and so on.
