This can depend on which country he is from. If he is an EEA country or Swiss national, he will be fine. There is currently a big shake up of immigration law going on in the UK and the old work permit scheme is effectively going out of the window. Your fiance will need to apply under the new points based system. He should contact the Home Office or the UK Border Agency about this. Basically the scheme awards points for things like knowledge of English language, job offers, proposed salary etc. They also divide prospective employees into 5 tiers. How he progresses will depend on whether he is considered a highly skilled worker (Tier 1) or a skilled worker with sponsorship/offer from a firm holding a sponsorship licence (Tier 2). The other tiers relate to people like sportsmen and youth workers so are unlikely to apply. Check out the UK Border Agency website for further info. Also, when you get married he will have additional rights to live and work here.
