How can monkeypox be spread?
• From an infected animal through a bite. • By direct contact with an infected animals blood, body fluids, or lesions. • It can be spread from person to person, but it is much less infectious than smallpox. • By prolonged face-to-face contact. • By direct contact with body fluids of an infected person. • By contact with virus-contaminated objects, such as bedding or clothing. Treatment and Prevention Wash hands thoroughly after contact with potentially infected animals or people, and avoid contact with skin lesions. There is no specific treatment. Smallpox vaccinations have been reported to reduce the risk of monkeypox in Africa. Antiviral drugs, such as cidofovir, are being evaluated for the treatment of monkeypox.
